The hues of Autumn are covering our little corner of the world here in North Austin and Round Rock, and it’s the perfect time to capture your senior photos! Fall is one of the most beloved senior photos seasons, but planning for a fall senior session involves more than just picking a date and a location. Here are some practical tips that will ensure your session is a smashing success:

Layers and colors in wardrobe selection: If there’s one thing I can emphasize for my seniors while they select a wardrobe, it’s to embrace textures and layers. Even if you’re wearing solids or basics, layering and adding texture will make your outfits feel more expensive and interesting. It will also add depth to your images. Look for rich, warm colors like deep orange, rust, red, maroon, and brown to achieve a warm and cozy look for a fall session, and then incorporated textures like denim, wool, and linen to add visual interest.
Choose the right location: Take advantage of the stunning fall landscapes in your area. I am always scouting for locations that showcase the season’s beauty, such as parks adorned with colorful foliage, rustic barns, or even urban spots with unique autumnal charm. If you have a location in mind that is specific to our area, please let me know and we can discuss what will work best for your overall vision and ideas.

Golden hour is your best friend: As the days grow shorter in the fall, take advantage of the magical ‘golden hour’—the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the light is soft and golden. This natural lighting can add warmth and depth to your photos, creating a beautiful, ethereal atmosphere. I love planning sessions in the golden hour when it works with everyone’s schedules, because they are truly something special. Even if you don’t have the specific golden hour window, the lighting is soft and warm during the autumn months, which makes is ideal!
Add seasonal personal touches: Incorporate personal touches to make your senior portraits uniquely yours. Whether it’s a musical instrument, a sports jersey, or something representing your hobbies or passions, these props add personality and depth to your photos. Consider bringing a favorite book, a bouquet of fall flowers, or even seasonal elements like pumpkins or leaves to infuse the spirit of autumn into your session. Steer clear of anything cheap or trendy, because that can make your session look dated really quickly. Instead, opt for subtle and meaningful props.

Trust me, and know I have your best interests at heart! Most importantly, relax and enjoy the experience. Trust your photographer to guide you with poses and expressions that will highlight your personality. Be open to trying different angles and movements, and don’t forget to bring your natural smile and expressions to capture the real you during this exciting phase of life. No one wants you to have the perfect senior photos more than me!
