When it comes to senior photos, I always recommend that seniors wear what they love and feel confident in. For some, that means the latest trends and for others, it’s a very classic or vintage style. Whether you are someone who loves studying and planning out the latest styles or you love wearing very minimalist pieces, there are some items that photograph better than others. This also depends largely on your location (which we can discuss in your initial consultation!), but it’s important to choose clothes that reflect you and your personality. Today, I want to highlight some of the most recent trends that I’ve seen, and how to make sure they look picture-perfect!

-Sneakers: Sneakers are obviously nothing new, but there is a large number of seniors who have chosen more chunky Nikes or similar styles for their shoots. Whether it’s a regular Air Force 1 or something super rare like the Dunk Lows, heavyweight sneakers are an awesome trend that looks fantastic in senior photos. Sneakers are a great way to dress down a fancier fabric like satin (like platforms with a satin midi skirt) or to add interest to a more simple outfit like jeans and a tee shirt. One of the best tips I can offer you is to make sure you clean them the best you can before your shoot so they look tidy and aren’t distracting. Also, be sure to choose the appropriate socks that look right with the shoe.
-Hoop earrings: Hoops are having a major moment, but be sure that you choose a flattering size and shape for your face, hairstyle, and makeup. If your hair is up, a larger hoop can feel a little distracting, so opt for a medium size or smaller earring. If your hair is down, sometimes you can get away with a larger size hoop, just be careful that it doesn’t get pieces of hair in the hoop during your session. When in doubt, a simple, 3/4” gold hoop is always timeless and looks good on everyone.
-Peasant style blouses and tops: There are tons of pretty, floral, and ruched options in terms of shirts right now, but you want to be sure it fits properly before your session. Make sure you can freely move around without your undergarments showing. Bras can be tricky with ruched, puff sleeve styles, so choose a strapless bra if you can. Try moving around in front of a mirror so that you can make sure nothing is showing that you don’t want showing. Stand in front of a light source to be sure it’s not overly sheer. Lastly, try any blouse on with the pants or skirt you plan to wear to make sure it all works well together.
-Wide-leg jeans: I love the nineties styles that many seniors are bringing into their shoots. It’s a super fun style, and can look polished when it’s done correctly. With wide-leg jeans, the length is key. If you are choosing a wide-leg pair, check the hem to see if it’s clean and not dragging on the ground, and try them on to see the length with the shoes you plan to wear. Look for a fitted style top to balance out a wide-leg style and keep you from looking overwhelmed by the width of the pants. Especially for you petite ladies, a fitted top will be more flattering with a more loose pair of pants.
